Take It Like A Man: Fall 2008 Coats

23 Sep 2008

Summer’s done so as the temperature drops, it’s time to start thinking about coats and jackets. As always, I like to keep it classic and there’s a lot of great choices.

The Ramones

For fall, I’m partial to leather jackets. I’ve always like bomber jackets, which remind me of Steve McQueen and James Dean, and riders jackets famously worn by the Ramones.

If you’re not into that you cant go wrong with a classic Barbour coat. This coat is classic and will last you a lifetime, because once the waxed waterproof coating wears off, send it back to them and they’ll recoat it for as long as you live.

When it pours, I think there’s something cool about those classic yellow raincoats that you always put up a fight with your mom when she wanted you to wear them when you wear a kid, and bright yellow was all over the runways this past season. If you want to look grown up a bit, there’s always a Macintosh or Trench, which when cut slim can look good.

For Winter, your probably going to want something more substantial than the ones above and there’s a lot of ways to go. You can go the pea coat route, and even though you see them around a lot, you can stand out by making sure it fits perfectly (slim but not tight) and with classic touches like gold buttons as seen on versions by Margiela and Band of Outsiders. You can also get one from a surplus store, but make sure to size down as they fit pretty big.

If you want to get your Holden Caulfield on, duffle coats are a good choice, not to mention really warm. You can get them in classic blue and black, but Comme Des Garcons just did a bunch in some electric colors.

If you want something a little more technical, I like Moncler, despite being popular amongst the D&G/D Squared crowd. They’ve done stuff with Junya Watanabe in the past, and just signed Thom Browne to do a line, but the regular ones will suffice.

Where To Buy A Coat in Toronto:

Nomad 431 Richmond St. West

Harry Rosen 82 Bloor Street West (we don’t shop any mall outlets)

Uncle Otis 26 Bellair St.

Either way, there a bunch of choices which depends on which style your going for but the biggest thing is make sure they’re going to fit well and keep you warm. Also, since winter coats can get pretty expensive, it makes sense to invest in something classics your going to be excited to wear season after season.

The quilted Corpus joint is passable because the fur collar come off. Those Moncler jackets are the closest thing to having your own feathers, and I think they’re dope as fuck.
