Hesta Prynn In Civil Shepherd

A girl and her band. Straight out of  NYC, Hesta Prynn In Civil Shepherd is a five-part ensemble fronted by Miss Hesta Prynn herself, aka Julie Potash.

Taking a break from her previous group, white girl hip-hop trio Northern State, this has been a side project that is now in full swing. Northern State first received recognition while touring with Tegan & Sara, and have since gained a strong following.

With Hesta Prynn’s music being produced by Chuck Brody (who has worked with Lykke Li) and overseen by Sara Quin, there is a definite influence via both, plus a little something extra. Contrasting Northern State, you’ll hear subtle, melodic electro, sweet vocals, hints of acoustic guitar, with some signature rapping. Lyrics like “the smell of burnt out lust and death, the fire of love is on my breath” are abstract and poetic.

Check out her MySpace page to sample some goodness. Listed under the genre of “Electro/French Pop/Religious”, who needs anything else? I have a new respect for religious electro-pop from France. How eclectic!
