A Queers Quest for the IDOL!!
22 Sep 2009
I am Jeoh Zhere, Queer Karaokier, and on a quest for an IDOL win. There are two worth entering. Queer Idol is a ground breaking year long competition, that “will audition 40 of Toronto’s most promising singers.” Performers show off their stuff on the stage at Goodhandys.
Both are open to people auditioning that understand the three simple principles of being an IDOL contestant. Have fun, be serious when necessary, and let the votes fall where they may. Canadian Karaoke Idol gives the performer the chance to shine and sing on a karaoke stage, but the voting is on the internet.
I went to my old stomping grounds - The Rose and Thorn Pub – for some inspiration. It was from that very pub in 2005 Etobicoke IDOL started the “IDOL” trend that has sent shock waves through the GTA. This is where I got my first taste of what competing would be like.
The competition was pretty stiff. People who got into the top spots didn’t show nerves or weakness… they just performed! The winner? Christian Phillipe Mejorada a seasoned karaoke host with a huge voice, character and charisma. He is short, cute and very funny. He gave me a few pointers as I went through the rounds, but not enough to beat him.
Christian went on to compete in Queer Idol. His musical number was scathing. Hot boys dancing on either side of him! Never knew he had that in him in 2005!
You can still get into Queer Idol for this year. The closing date for entries is Sept 30/2009. The prizes are fabulous! Spa Packages, Gym Memberships, and the ultimate! A professional recording contract! The judges are professional; they know exactly what they are looking for and are very kind in their critique.
Here is the Judging Panel Brandon Brophy, Stephanie “Ivory” Conover , Damon de Szegheo.
I am entering again this year, 2nd time’s a charm? We shall see…
Meanwhile, back at The Rose and Thorne, I met up with Monique Richardson of Hott Traxx Karaoke. She is keeping the spirit of karaoke competition alive, with Canadian Karaoke Idol. As the website states “[it] is a karaoke singing contest and competition where karaoke singers compete to be the top of their province, as well as try to advance to be the top Canadian Karaoke Idol.” Top prize? $250 and bragging rights.
Voting is done by visitors to the site. “This competition is open to people who come to a host bar, or submit an entry on YouTube.” So, I will be visiting her to practice my songs for Queer Idol and entering her contest! Competition brings a level of excitement to any one’s performance.
Next installment of “A Queers Quest for the IDOL” will feature my foray into Professional Voice training. Should be fun, as I get to go through Craigslist Ads, and NOW magazine.
