Guns Don’t Kill People… Coat Check Lineups Do

13 Oct 2009

Remember in high school when us girls would talk about such and such guy being so beautiful? I know. Weird. He’d be one of those guys.

Alright I gotta admit, I have this huge crush on Diplo. Seeing one half of Major Lazer last night (Switch was M.I.A.) couldn’t have been a better way to end this shitty week I’ve been having. Diplo (Wes as I like to call him) stopped by the Kool Haus for the Guvernment’s 13th anniversary party. If you haven’t heard of Major Lazer before, you must be living in a cave… no a shoe box.

Diplo and Switch are two of the most successful underground DJs/producers in the game. They’re the heads of Mad Decent and Dubsided Records and together they’re Major Lazer. Both huge fans of dancehall and reggae, they flew to Jamaica to record their debut “Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do”. With a little bit of help from some locals and friends, and a few weeks later, one of the most anticipated albums of this year was born.

I arrived there before 1 am just on time for ML’s set. Freezing from the outside (Fuck coat check) I quickly made my way through the Guvernment crowd, over to the Kool Haus and ran on stage to take some pics. And there he was in a dark grey pinstriped blazer and tie playing an earful of eargasm of music I was ready to be taken to Jamaica or something…everything from ML’s debut of live remixes like “Can’t Stop Now”, “Mary Jane”, “Keep It Goin Louder”, and crowd favourite “Pon de Floor” to other familiar tracks like Kid Cudi’s “Day n Night” (Live Red Mashup), Barrington Levy “Murderer” (Live “Caspa” Dubstep Mashup), Erup “Click Mi Fingerz”,
Damian Marley “Welcome to Jamrock” (Live Dub Step Remix), Laidback Luke & Diplo’s “Hey!” etc. (Thanks Anth) Wes got the crowd going nuts.

I couldn’t help notice a very familiar face onstage as well. It was ML’s hypeman Skerrit Bwoy from their “Pon de Floor Video”. Now, that guy is the most interesting person I’ve ever watched. At one point he brought out a ladder, leaped off of it into one of the dancer’s crotch and humped the lights out of her. I heard he did somewhat of the same stunt at a Mad Decent party, but climbed a street light/traffic pole instead. Damn, this guy must be fun to be around.

I was having so much fun, in a blink of an eye it was all over. I really wanted to ask Wes a question since I wasn’t able to interview him this time. I got a brief moment with him to take a picture but damn… my shyness kicked in and before I knew it he was gone. FUCK! I just wanted to know if he watched It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia…
