Karaoke? Yes .. you can!

Karaoke? Yes .. you can!

As a Veteran Karaokier, I have had the pleasure of singing with various hosts with amazing books of songs, and great sound pounding out of the speakers.  There are so many advantages to a night of Karaoke with friends. It doesn’t have to break the bank and you dont have to drink to have a great time. We are   loyal, and supportive of fellow singers who always welcome a few more.
Here are some events you can check out in the month of September: LIVE KARAOKE at the Drake Underground   and Carson T Fosters “Kickass Karaoke” at the Rivoli Pool Hall. It is said that the best Karaoke is often sung at the tables, not at the microphone. But if you are a Karaokier, then these two events help step up your game.

Singing with a rock and roll band makes you feel like a rock star.  Shark Week has been performing LIVE KARAOKE for a few years now. Gord Light is the leader of the “hardest working band in karaoke.” He  calls those of us who come to his event “Sharklings.”   They are playing the  Drake Underground on Wed Sept 1st 2010.

Shark Week  was created out of a request from the Bovine Sex Club in 2007.   They  wanted a classic punk, metal and hard rock, Karaoke Band.  Fraser Fulton worked at the Bovine, and he asked Gord Light to help him put a band together. Gord asked  Donnie Arsenault  as he   “…knows the idiom better than anyone ..”  Greg Wilkenson had worked on a few projects with Gord and this seemed to be a good match.

Their set list is impressive.  You get all Canadian with  Neil Young’s  “Rockin in the Free World” Stuff by AC/DC, Led Zepplin and Pat Benatar are favourites, so it’s best to get in for the first set. $5 cover and songs are neatly printed in a binder, not from a  monitor.    The next round of LIVE KARAOKE will be at Mitzi’s Sister on Sept 18th 2010.

Carson T Foster is the host to go to when you want good downtown karaoke on a Sunday night.  He has a great book of songs that he adds to regularly. There’s quite a bit of  obscure and rare songs.  Regulars are extremely loyal when it comes to showing up for his show for that reason. It’s held at the   Rivoli Pool Hall. The interior is   fresh with very clean lines. You feel like you are in a massive space. The sound’s echo fills up quite nicely to the back of the club. He has gigs twice a month.

So, whether you are a seasoned singer or a complete newbie.   Round up your fellow cubicle dwellers and  BBM-ers.  Be sure to include anyone else who hasn’t had a decent night out in awhile.  Sit down at the a largest table, cheer on the performers and split   a pitcher or crack open a Perrier. Bonus points if you get up to the mic. Careful however, once you start Karaoke,  there’s no turning back.
