20 Questions With Sekou Lumumba (Bedouin Soundclash)

We now officially have the complete Bedouin Soundclash set. Eon Sinclair was one of the first people to take the 20 Qs years ago, then Jay Malinowski took them when he launched his solo project, and finally we have drummer Sekou Lumumba who’s taken them leading up to the launch of their latest album out on September 28th.

1. What is your dream of happiness?

That’s easy: Chocolate. I’m doing backstrokes in the pools of my imagination just thinking about it now.

2. Blonde or Brunette?

I kinda have a thing for redheads, but if these are my only choices, I’ll have to go with brunettes.

3. What is the quality you like most in a woman?

I’m a sucker for any woman who calls me on my bullshit. When it happens t I turn into a defenseless little boy who’ll do just as he’s told.

4. What do you fear most?

Dying in a plane crash. I’m about 100% convinced it’s how I’ll perish.

5. 808s or 909s?

Definitely 909s! 808s’ just get all the press.

6. What’s your biggest regret?

Not taking lessons for my instrument. Scarcely a day passes don’t I wonder how much better I’d been if I had.

7. What’s your fav bar or club in the world?

It burned down in a fire a while back, but I’d have to say Santika Club in Bangkok. Spent a year in Thailand in ’06 and it was the first club a friend took me to after I’d arrived. Walked in and immediately felt sucked into a poorly lit ,loud, muggy, pulsing, forgotten corner of the Earth. I’ll never forget that feeling.

8. What’s the one thing you can’t live without?

My iPhone. No Question. At least twice a week I look at it and say, “Thank you.” If you have one you’ll know exactly what I mean. If you don’t, I’m truly sorry your BBM service crashed again this week.

9. What are the 3 musicians dead or alive you’d like to see perform?

Henry Mancini, Sarah Vaughn, Faith No More.

10. What is your favorite decade in music?

The seventieighties?

11. If you had to choose, would you rather go blind or deaf and why?

Funny, I was asked this question a couple days ago. My answer’s blind. The idea of never hearing music again is unbearable. I couldn’t take it. Waiter, cheque please.

12. How old is too old?

For what, a relationship? Sex? Marriage? To live until? Well, it doesn’t matter as the answer for all is 83. After that, I’m not interested grandma.

13. Where do you see yourself in 15 years?

Here we go again. Give it a rest would you??? YOU’RE NOT MY REAL DAD!!!

14. Who’s your hero?

My little sister Charisse.

15. What’s your favourite colour?

Pantone PMS#144C is the new black.

16. What song could you live without ever hearing again?

Tough question. There are several songs that hold that distinction. ‘I Got A Feeling’ by Black Eyed Peas turned me into a werewolf last time I heard it, so I’ll go with that one.

17. Metallica or Madonna?

Metallica. Sorry, but they were my gateway drug into heavy metal. Though I do greatly admire Madonna’s arms.

18. What’s your most hated vice?

Chocolate.

19. Who is the most tragic figure in history?

Blues guitarist Robert Johnson.

20. What are the top three live shows you’ve seen in your life?

GWAR at Sound Academy in ’09, Fishbone w/ Primus at The Masonic Temple in ’93, Al Green at Roy Thompson hall in ’99.
