Now Hear This…Summer Video Round Up

Now Hear This…Summer Video Round Up

If you’re like me aside from being chained to a desk for 8 hours a day, you don’t spend too much time indoors during the summer. This is awesome for so many reasons but there are a few things, like music videos, that tend to slide under the radar.

I’ve assembled a list of 10 videos that you may have missed while out gallivanting this summer, and while ‘Otis’ may be one killer track, these videos contain a little more substance than a Michael Bay rip-off (even if it was directed by Spike Jonze).

Have a gander!

I Break Horses :: Winter Beats

I Break Horses – Winter Beats from Bella Union on Vimeo.
I have such a crush on this Swedish duo right now. Entirely in b&w this video features simple yet captivating time-lapse images of cloud and sun movement with shattered items being sped up, slowed down and reversed.

Bon Iver :: Holocene

BON IVER “Holocene” from nabil elderkin on Vimeo.
The vivid colours captured in the midst of the breathtaking scenery throughout this video are as beautiful as the song they’re synchronized with. Plus, this potential young Justin Vernon is a total badass who lives with Frodo. I’m going to go roll around in the tall grass now, brb.

The Horrors :: Still Life

The Horrors, “Still Life” from Ollie Murray on Vimeo.
OK, so there is nothing particularily unique about this video but holy crap are The Horrors ever back! That slow building horn section paired with the setting sun at the end is just lovely.

Best Coast :: Our Deal (Directors Cut)

Best Coast – Our Deal from sssnake on Vimeo.
Holy cameos! Drew Barrymore’s modern take on ‘West Side Story’ with a pinch of ‘The Warriors’ compliments Best Coast’s essence of punk perfectly. This is the director’s cut so it runs for a little over 10 minutes but it is worth watching the whole thing. I dare you not to cry at the end!

Hotkid :: Rip It Into Pieces

HOTKID “Rip It Into Pieces” Directed by Alon Isocianu from Vision Entertainment on Vimeo.
Of the three psychedelic videos I included in my list, this one is by far the best. Granted face painting is pretty much the coolest thing you can do, the walls of faces that the band rocks out in front of is incredible! ‘Rip It Into Pieces’ is available for free download on the band’s website right now!

Fool’s Gold – Wild Window

Fool’s Gold – “Wild Window” from Paul Tao on Vimeo.
Not to be confused with A-Track’s label, Fool’s Gold, this sunny, feel-good LA collective is back with their latest album ‘Leave No Trace’ to provide you with a colourful escape from your run-of-the-mill indie in both sights and sounds.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – The Adventures Of Rain Dance Maggie

Red Hot Chili Peppers – The Adventures Of Rain Dance Maggie from NEWS ? METALDISCS on Vimeo.
I had an epiphany after I watched this video. I don’t particularly love RHCP. I couldn’t quite force myself to listen to song after song after song about California but now I get it – they literally are California. Sidebar: after everything Anthony Kiedis has been though how is he still such a fox?

Tori Y Moi – How I Know

Toro y Moi – How I Know from Jordan Kim on Vimeo.
‘Under the Pine’ has been one of my favourite albums of 2011 so imagine my delight when I see that ‘How I Know’ has been used to soundtrack a crossover episode of Scooby-Doo and Casper the Friendly ghost with Damian from Mean Girls and a dance sequence from Michael Jackson’s Ghosts. Best.

Girls – Vomit

Girls – Vomit from PIASGermany on Vimeo.
I don’t particularly have a thing for cars or anything, I’m more of a bike gal myself, but hot damn that is one sexy Mustang! Driving videos usually cause me nausea but this one has that alluring Girls pull.

Rural Alberta Advantage – Muscle Relaxants

The Rural Alberta Advantage – “Muscle Relaxants” [OFFICIAL VIDEO] from José Lourenço on Vimeo.

RAA team up once again with director José Lourenço for their second video from ‘Departing’ which demonstrates his creative depth with this stunning b&w video was shot entirely underwater.

    How is Best Coast remotely punk?

  • Katemasewich

    I said essence of punk. And sure, there might not be any trite anti-establishment lyrics but garage and surf rock are both sub genres of punk, so that’s how.
