‘Chronicle’
I’m love movies that are shot first person; Blair Witch, Cloverfeild, Paranormal Activity, [REC], etc. are all amazing and when done right you feel as though this is real life and these sometimes terrifying events are a reality. Recently I hit up the theaters with some pals and a joint (m39/ duh) to see Josh Trank & Max Landis’ ‘Chronicle’ after hearing nothing but fantastic reviews. Also before I saw this film I saw Max Landis’ ‘The Death of Superman’ short just to get a taste of the creative mind behind the film (watch it, dudes such a nerd it’s hard not to love the guy).
Anyways, oh yea ‘Chronicle’, sooooooooooooooo good. The film centres on Andrew (who looks like a young Leonardo DiCaprio), a loner who lives with his dying mother, and physically abusive father, and his only/ somewhat friend is his cousin Matt. Andrew just decides one day that he wants to film everything, and everything starts when Matt and Andrew head to a high school rave. Probably the sickest rave I’ve seen where the playlist is Crystal Castles and Justice…you know the movies on the right track when the people behind it are ACTUALLY in touch with what’s “good”.
Not gonna ruin anything that happens during the rave, cause something happens during this time that Matt, Andrew, and Matt’s friend Steve (Michael B. Jordan of Friday Night Lights!!) acquire superpowers. As soon as these boys get powers I’m immediately jealous. These powers look so real, from pulling pranks, to flying around, it’s hard to believe this isn’t happening for real, and through these powers the boys start developing and deep friendship. The friendship these boys have is totally understandable, like the same you would have with someone if you experienced the best time of your life whether it be from building a house together or being on a completely positive drug fueled bender with your pals where their is no come down.
Things quickly turn dark. Andrew is still getting abused but can now defend himself, but using these powers when your angry has serious consequences. The more the boys use their powers the stronger they grow and the more intense shit they can do. Watching Andrew, a nice boy with family issues, go from being so happy with his pals, to out of control crushing cars, killing people, and basically just going right to the dark side.
‘Chronicle’ is realityand It’s what’s hopefully what humans evolve to. The reality of the way the film was shot defiantly made me stoked to see future works by Josh and Max, and not gonna lie made me cry, especially when the boys were expressing their love for each other and eventually just goes…..well you gotta see it to find out.
