According To a Queer Grrrl: The Super Naughty Show and Gay NYE
For my 50th blog, I present to you two of my favourite things: Sex and Halloween. I have an interview with an art director and a new concept for Halloween 2012, AKA GAY New Years Eve
I had an opportunity to ask Christian Aldo, Director of The SUPER WONDER GALLERY about his latest art show. His picture is below. The images in this piece are examples of what a person will be admiring at SUPER NAUGHTY SHOW
What is your “behind the scene secret” for this event?
There is no “behind the scene secret.” It’s no secret that I want all the artists in the show to push their expressive boundaries and comfort zones. I keep saying to the artists: when creating your new work for the show, you should be either turned on, embarrassed or blushing. It’s the excuse that everyone needs to let it all hang out, so to speak. If they are not being challenged by one of the above emotions, then chances are they are playing it too safe . After all it IS The SUPER NAUGHTY SHOW, NOT the Super Sensual Show or Romantic Show.
Do you have any surprises for your patrons?
I do have a few surprises for all the patrons. I’m creating life size PEEP SHOW MACHINES with real naked men and women inside of them. Just insert your toonie and peep inside for a 60 second thrill.
Have you done this type of event before?
This is the second time that I have done “The SUPER NAUGHTY SHOW” here in T.O. I plan on having it return once a year. With the help of corporate sponsorship, I plan on making this thing grow along with all of my other shows. My exhibitions are large themed group shows and I am always looking for daring and creative artists that like the challenge of a good theme, especially if it’s out of their comfort zone.
What will you say is a sign that this event was successful?
To me what makes a successful show is the work created by the artists, well curated and lit, in an exciting atmosphere lending itself as a conduit for the audience and when that happens sales happen, and everyone can eat, pay the bills and afford to rise to the challenge of the next show.
Do you have a goals for the future?
One day, I would like to be thought of as the Ed Mirvish or the Liberace of the art world. My goal is to create a visceral art scene with substance, irreverent creativity and pulsating SHOW BIZ PIZZAZZ. So far it’s working. This season you can look forward to “The AMAZING SCI-FI SHOW” and “The MOST OFFENSIVE SHOW on EARTH”

Halloween AKA Gay New Years Eve

Oct 31 is Halloween. Queerios of many stripes and persuasions recognize this date as something special. Some people associate Gay Christmas with Pride and Halloween. I suggest that we consider this alternative for Oct 31 2012: Let’s think of Halloween as“Gay New Years Eve.”
What is New Years Eve, but a chance to break out those dancing shoes with the best dress in your closet? Don’t masculine identified folks seem to have just a bit more swagger?
How do we, as a community of queer people, feel a certain freedom to express another side of ourselves? You CAN enjoy putting on an over the top costume and taking it out to the streets.
Church Wellesley Village has their annual celebration of all things Halloween, during Halloweek. This festival, is the largest of it’s kind in Canada. People jam pack all down Church and Wellesley to Carlton and Church. The costumes often defy description, but let me sharesome that blew my Doc’s off. My favourite trio of costumes ever seen during Halloweek were The Joker, Katy Perry, and topless belly dancer. The music they were dancing to was from the various bars around them. As of date of publishing this article, the info about this year’s celebration are still under wraps. Click on the above link for more information closer to the date.
I say we kick it up a notch for Halloween 2012 and celebrate the past year behind us and a better one to come. I am pretty sure many of us have some regrets. Singing Auld Lang Syne at midnight will have a different ring to it. You can follow the twitter hashtag #gaynye for updates and add your own thoughts to the convo.
