20 Questions with Dave Brown from The New Cities

20 Questions with Dave Brown from The New Cities

These handsome young fellows are on our top played songs right now. With a brand new album and hit single, `Heatwave`, The New Cities` scenester style and upbeat songs are enough to turn us into screaming 13 year old girls at MuchOnDemand.

Lead singer Dave Brown, took a little time out of their (very busy) schedule to give us some answers to some VIQ’s (Very Important Questions)

1. What is your dream of happiness?

A home in Barbados…and to be touring all around the world for the next 10 years.

2. Blonde or Brunette?

Both… Even red head and darker hair. I love women and I don’t care about the color of their hair.

Respect. Being respectful is the key. We are all different and no one should judge others by their difference. We all come from different background and walks of life, that’s what makes us who we are.

4. What do you fear most?

Melting by acid. I was traumatized by watching Robocop when I was young and there is a scene where a dude falls in a pool of acid and his skin and bones start to melt. That would be effing horrible.

808s

8. What’s the one thing you can’t live without?

I’d probably say my cell.

9. What are the 3 musicians dead or alive you’d like to see perform?

-joy division
-new order
-Bloody beetroots, death crew 77

There is amazing stuff from all decades. I can’t just pick one. I’m starting to listen to more of 50′s and 60′s music lately.

11. If you had to choose, would you rather go blind or deaf and why?

Deaf. Even as a musician I’d still want to be able to see the beauty of the world.

12. How old is too old?

Too old is never happening. As long as your heart is young izzzzzz all good!

13. Where do you see yourself in 15 years?

On the road again or producing bands. And I want to own a tattoo shop.

14. Who’s your hero?

My Dad. For his never-ending energy and motivation. On that level, I wish I could be more like him.

15. What’s your favourite colour?

Black. I know it’s not a color but you just can’t get bored of black.

16. What song could you live without ever hearing again?

“My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion

Metallica

18. What’s your most hated vice?

Picking my nose. I started when I was young, never stopped. Kidding….maybe.

20 Questions with Rad People – Bree Williamson

20 Questions with Rad People – Bree Williamson

Meet Bree Williamson.

Born and raised in Toronto, she planned to pursue a career in business, psychology or women’s studies (She has a B Sc. from U of T). Devotng her time to community service played a key role in her life, and among other causes, she acted as a Planned Parenthood advocate at a Toronto organization for teens in need of sexual-health counseling. While her philanthropic career became a major part of her life, the decision to pursue a (possibly) stale career was not. Thus, she pursued her acting career and it began to flourish; among her roles she can count Mutant X and Nikita as 2 shows she had as a jump off point.

She now plays Jessica Bouchanan on One Life to Live and is our hero – she’ll be one of the local celebs to participate in September’s AIDS Walk for Life.

20 Questions with The Hood Internet

20 Questions with The Hood Internet

Not to sound snobby, but Girl Talk is SO 2006.  Since then many have hopped on the mash-up genre but have been unable to do it well.  However, The Hood Internet (a duo composed of Aaron Brink -aka ABX and Steve Reidell – aka STV SLV, pronounced Steve Sleeve from Chicago) have done the unthinkable.  They have done mash-up in a way that would make Mr. Gregg Gillis (aka. Girl Talk) proud.  The epic mix tapes they have created fusing hip-hop, indie rock, dubstep and downtempo are enough to get any party started. Sure enough, they are taking on a party of epic proportions: Camp Bisco in Mariaville, New York taking place from July 7-9, 2011. and prior to them rocking the festival crowd out, we decided to grill them with our usual 20 Questions.

1. What is your dream of happiness?

STV: To be able to travel anywhere in the world and live there for as long as I feel like. Also, talking animals.
ABX: Grilled cheese with five types of cheese served with tomato soup that never gets cold and never burns your tongue.

2. Blonde or Brunette?
STV: I don’t discriminate.

6. What’s your biggest regret?
STV: Not going to see Nirvana in 1993 when my friend Andy had an extra ticket.
ABX: Not being able to play a whole bunch of musical instruments really well. I like that in Groundhog Day, Bill Murray’s character learns to play the piano. I would do that, but with a whole bunch of instruments.

7. What’s your fav bar or club in the world?
STV: Tie between First Avenue in Minneapolis and Metro/Smart Bar in Chicago.
ABX: The Hideout in Chicago and The Blind Pig in Ann Arbor.

STV: Blind. I’ve seen lots of things and could approximate images, but not hearing new music would be a drag.
ABX: Definitely blind. I use my ears more than my eyes on a daily basis.

12. How old is too old?
STV: That’s a relative notion.
ABX: Too old is always someone else’s age. Don’t know what happens if you are the oldest person in the world. Maybe that’s too old.

13. Where do you see yourself in 15 years?

20 Questions with DJ Lady Miss Kier

20 Questions with DJ Lady Miss Kier

Oh, how I miss the glory days when I was young and the music moved me til no end… where have those days gone!! Do you know where they have gone!?!?

No worries we found ‘em at IMISS90SIX, a new monthly 90′s dance party that has amazing headliners from our glory days… and who better to kick off opening night than the one n only Lady Miss Kier. As I soon we heard the PinkMafia crew was dying for to sit down with the legend and her signature red-do.  It was epic I totally remember listening to Dee-Lite records when I was in my glory days , and who could forget the hardcore rave remix ofGroove is in the Heartit was massive.

So I  had a whole interview planned but that went right out the window as we  sat down to drinks… it was more like chilling with your BFF. We immediately started  to shoot the breeze about all things one would think you might with discuss with Lady Miss Kier: gay rights and her love for playing PRIDE round the world, house music, drag queens, booze, our mutual love for manicured nails, (I even scored a  quick lesson on applying fake eye lashes).  Our conversation was so breezy before we knew it our interview time quickly evaporated, even when the publicist came back  up to escort us out, Lady Miss Kier actually said to her: “Aw, really?  You  don’t have to rush these ladies.  I’m having fun!” (insert blush). Even after the cue to leave we were still chatting and I was able to ask her two things: what truly has your heart performing or DJing? I really can’t pick, I love them both, but DJing gives me the chance to explore other artist and not just myself. We had to ask “what’s in your purse you can’t leave without”? After answers like money, keys Lady Miss Kier settled on a Sharpie marker!! She is a DJ and artist after all… they need to write, whether on C’D's or paper, they gotta write.

She was on cloud 9 while playing the ones & twos (some of her tunes own but  mostly others), Ama & Pinkie were tearing up some serious rug with the classic selections. The night was the shiznit, I mean what more can you ask for… an awesome interview with truly amazing artist and person. Hands down one of the best!!

If you aren’t familiar with Deee-Lite, wiki/youtube/hypemachine them now. Classic dance tunes, seriously amazing people.

Even more awesome after our lil sit down at IMISS90SIX, DJ Lady Miss Kier was gracious enough to answer our 20 Questions.

20 Questions with Lindi Ortega

Meet up and comer, Lindi Ortega. Her unique voice and token  red boots will be making an appearance at Dakota Tavern on the 7th to celebrate the release of her first full length album (signed with Last Gang Records). Her first EP received critical success, and we have a sneaking suspicion this Torontonian has much more in store for us in the future.

1. What is your dream of happiness?

Happiness itself is a dream and rarely a constant in the human existence. I am most happy when I am creating and performing. Music is a universal language with which I hope to converse with as many people as possible. That is my dream of happiness.

I think both are beautiful!

For what exactly? To have babies? to wear hot pants?  If it’s with regards to making music, I don’t think there is such a thing as too old so long as you’re good at it! Look at some of the old blues cats still kickin it.. they are like fine wine that gets better with age!

20 Questions with Justin from The Vaccines

20 Questions with Justin from The Vaccines

I’ve been an advocate for The Vaccines since I first heard ‘If You Wanna’ last summer mainly because of the media’s newfound reluctance to fall head over heels for a band that generates any kind of buzz. But where is the harm in that? As music fan, if your expectations negate every band and corresponding album to change the face of music, you’ll find yourself constantly disappointed. I say give in to the hype because at the very least every now and then you’ll find a band like The Vaccines who are the furthest thing from a disappointment.

On their debut album ‘What Did You Expect from The Vaccines‘ they blatantly acknowledge the fact that nothing they are presenting their listeners with is game-changing. Chances are you’ve heard songs like these before. The lyrics aren’t going to provide the lost souls a new outlook on life, but the themes are the always relatable youthful transgressions, frustrations of growing up and physical attraction. What they’re doing may not be new, but it is how they are doing it that is so appealing. Their take on rock n’ roll that is tried and true with Ramones-fueled rebellion, Morrissey-like sexual frustration and all the reverb and distortion of Jesus and Mary Chain is an appeal to the way British rock once was.

The songs are packed tight on this 11 track album, most of which barely graze the three-minute mark, but allow those three prominent chords that are recycled throughout to be the building blocks that should be present in all guitar-based rock. There is much diversity found in it’s tracks whether on the Pixies-dusted ‘Blow it Out’, the 60’s girl group drumming a la The Shangri-Las on ‘Post Break-Up Sex’ or those aforementioned three chords that make up ‘Wreckin’ Bar (Ra Ra Ra)’ that will make even the most skeptical listener shuffle. ‘What Did You Expect from The Vaccines’ is a definite must for your summer rotation.

If you’re going to the sold out Arctic Monkeys show this Saturday at the Kool Haus be sure to head over early and catch The Vaccines opening. But first, pre-order the album here (out May 31st) and check out singer Justin Young’s answers to our 20 Questions.
