February 26th is coming up, and that means its Oscar time.  Usually the Oscars get me so stoked and I spend countless hours upon hours in front of my tv making sure I watch everything that’s been nominated in every category…DUH I like movies, but this year I’m not as excited. Maybe it’s because the films for best picture are pretty lackluster, or the Animated Feature category is shit..or maybe both, regardless I plan on trying to watch every movie that I can, and this year letting you know what will touch you at your core, or piss you off because you just wasted 2-3 hours.  This week  I watched: The Help, Moneyball, The Artist, and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

The Help

Starring: Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Jessica Chastain, and Octavia Spencer

The Help is nominated for Best Picture, and got Viola Davis a nomination for Actress in a Leading Role, and Jessica Chastain for Actress in a Supporting Role.

Pros:

So many people just don’t know what the hell they’re doing when they pack. What do you need three pairs of heels for on vacation? There is a real art form to packing light, and like many skills, it take a life time to perfect. Hell, even as I write this, I’m questioning whether or not I should have brought that ONE hoody, even though I know I’ll need it on the plane right home. And i’m pretty sure I brought too much underwear, which is a tough call when you’re still back in long johns land and can barely wrap your head around the concept of “bikini day and night”.

Here’s my tips to packing light to help you on the way and a list of what I brought to Thailand + Bali for 5 weeks. Also, shouts out to American Apparel for providing this saucy wardrobe.

Never pack:

-high heels, dvds, any more than 1 pair of sunglasses, anything really expensive, anything sentimental, or anything you can buy on the other side.  for example, I never bring toothpaste or toothbrushes or any toiletries that I can buy at a pharmacy cause they add up in your bag and that shit always explodes and ruins something. Why lug it to a foreign country just to clean it out of your makeup bag?

Do pack:

-books/magazines (that you’re willing to leave behind), and ipod, bathing suit, good pair or sunglasses, condoms and advil-two things that are better to have and not need then to need and not have, one decent pair of shoes (like Vans) you can wear in the jungle/at the beach.

Technique:

First, think about what you’re gonna bring and make a list for a week before. Make sure you pack neutrals and separates that compliment each other so you can mix and match easily. Don’t throw all that shit in a bag, cause you’ll just keep filling the bag with stuff and you’re guaranteed to over pack that way. Lay it all out on your bed so you can take away that 4th white teeshirt when you realize you’re over-doing it. Also, you can’t bring any more than your bag will carry, so the smaller the bag, the less you’ll bring.

Here’s my list:

-two tank tops (one white, one coloured)

-2 pairs of shorts (one white, one coloured)

-one teeshirt (white)-you might need this if you burn your shoulders/chest on the first day and have to cover up on the second.

-one zip up/hoody

-3 bathing suits

-one pair of workout socks

-one pair of Vans (i bought flip flops here and I plan on leaving them behind)

-concealer/lipgloss/mascara/bobby pins and an elastic

-proactive (guuurl, I am not about to get acne up in this bitch for no one)

-sports bra + workout shorts and running shoes (but that’s cause I keep the fitness in check people)

-one pair of leggings

-one pair of light pajama pants

-a tank top with built in bra (doubles as yoga shirt and tankini)

-one bra

-four pairs underwear: one black, one white, one thong and a workout pair (i could have gotten by with two)

-one nice onsie to wear out at night

-light coat (i had to wear it for the plane and it doubles as a rain coat, but I might dump it anyway)

-a nice wrap: good as a scarf for the plane, but also doubles as a towel and a blanket for flee infested pillows

-a netting bathing suit cover tank dress thingy (haven’t even worn it yet)

I guarantee you’ll buy stuff. I’ve already bought 3 blouses and a Lil Wayne tank dress.

There’s other things too, like I brought and iPad and a Computer, and some chords to charge my shit, but for me those are essentials. I also have a smaller, over night bag that doubles as a beach back or a weekender and carry on. With 24 hours of flights to get here, I needed it.

Midnight in Manhattan will be representing the different neighbourhoods of the New York City, by showcasing their uniqueness through their aesthetic and food. Wow HH. You’re clearly tied up in too much right now and not able to figure out what to do (probably why you came to me!). My suggestion – either find yourself an apartment or tell your ex that she has to move out.
Living together is tough on many relationships, but being broken up AND you’re seeing someone else? That makes things 3 times as complicated (both for you, your ex and your new girlie). Clearly you can’t bring the new lady by, and I’m sure that’s going to quickly become an issue for you both.

I suggest checking out mapitat this rad website takes all the Craigslist and Kijiji apartment ads and throws them together on an easy to use platform. It has great filtering features and shows you all of the listings on a map so you get to see what’s available. Since you’re low on cash you’ll need to beg your buddies to help you move – beer and pizza is a likely accepted form of payment. I’m sure someone you know has a car; U-Haul is another easy and relatively cheap option. Get yourself out of there sooner than later.

After moving out I then suggest you then tell your new lady friend how awesome she is for putting up with your ridiculousness bud. Take her out and then worship the ground she walks on. Somewhere decent and romantical – if you’re in Toronto some good spots would be The Atlantic, Milagro or Ruby Watchco. If I was her I would’ve said sayonara immediately upon hearing your living situation. Clearly she’s a keeper. Good luck!

RUMORS CONFIRMED FDCC NAMES NEW SPONSOR

For sometime now talk  around the fashion water-cooler has been that FDCC – Toronto Fashion Week was dumping LG (or vice-versa) as its main sponsor. Last week at the Royal Conservatory FDCC announced that LG would no longer be its title sponsor for Fashion Week, but (wait for it) MasterCard would be filling the slot. And our beloved Fashion Week has known been renamed “World MasterCard Fashion Week Toronto”.  I know I was not expecting that at all… when I first heard the rumor, I for sure thought Mercedes Benz (guess I was wrong).

PRODUCT REVIEW: Schick Hydro Silk Razor

I’m a lazy type of lady, I mean I cringe at thought of having to shave my legs (I wax ’cause I’m that lazy). So when the Schick Canada asked me to take the new Schick Hydro Silk out for a test I figured I’m a tough cookie so why not.

The Schick Hyrdo Silk boast many things, so I figured the best way to rate and review this product was to tackle all it’s claims.

1. Water-activated moisturizing serum hydrates throughout each shave.

” We all know the act of shaving is known to strip skin moisture and sometimes the skin itself so when a “razor” claims to moisturize we really wonder. After activating the serum underwater it became slimy and slick, and I began to shave with just the serum. After several strokes of the razor as lubricating and hydrating as the serum was I felt the need for the lather of shaving gel as I felt a slight irritation.” (o.5 out of 1)

2. Hydro Silk is the first Schick 5 curve-sensing blade razor designed for women.

“I mean five blades is quiet a stack so I expected nothing but a close shave and that was exactly what I got!!” (1 out of 1)

3. Unique Skin Guards help protect skin from irritation

“I have to be honest, I think the invention of Skin Guards on the top of each blade–to smooth the skin while shaving wasn’t by one of the biggest inventions of the year. I mean I really didn’t notice, but it if helps with that close shave I did enjoy – well who am I to complain.” (1 out of 1)

This is the best deal. The softest T shirts 5 for under $20

These American Apparel T shirts are great. They are the most fitted and probably the softest, but then again they’re $21+ per shirt *frowny face*.  Check out their website or offline, they have other styles, my favorite being the summer shirt.

Lindsay’s troubles started from the day she way born, because when you come from trailer trash it’s really hard to pull yourself out of it. Getting her first taste of fame in Disney’s ‘The Parent Trap’, and officially becoming a household name 6 years later in ‘Mean Girls’, Lindsay’s career seemed to be headed in the right direction. Introducing… Hollywood and the age of internet fame to Lindsay: her life is starting to change dramatically. The first big change we see in Lohan, is her fake tits and on the arms of Wilder Valderama. Ladies, #1 rule to follow for now and forever (ahem Demi Levato) DON’T DATE WILDER VALDERAMA, and I’d probably advise against fake tits, but they can always be taken out (Lohan 2 years later). During this time, Lindsay did manage to put out ‘Rumors’; a classic track, that further showed off the immense talent she is capable of. It wasn’t long after this, that Lindsay decided to stop eating, and start blowing her nose off.

Yea she was part of the Elite Young Hollywood, rolling up to clubs with Paris, Nicole, and Britney, but we all knew this couldn’t last; Rich girls get bored quickly and well Britney…she had other issues to take of.  Add to that a psychotic relationship with Samantha Ronson and a very public broken heart, Lindsay fututure is starting to take a different path then expected.

July 24, 2007: This is kinda ridiculous….remember that whole drunk and coked out high speed chase down the PCH? Yea.
July 25, 2007: Back in rehab…for the third time.
October 2007: This time her stay was legit..she’s out of rehab.
November 2007: Spends 87 minutes in jail for her 2 DUIs earlier that year.
May 2008: Apparent she stole a fur coat..blah blah blah
March 2009: Theirs a warrant out for her arrest, for constantly skipping her court appearances..oops
June 2009: She’s a jewel thief
May 2010: Lindsay is forced to wear an alcohol monitoring anklet for violating her probation yet again
June 2010: anklet goes off..oops
July 2010: Spends 12 days in jail
September 2010: Fails drug test, tests positive for cocaine, and has the alcohol anklet put back on. BAD GIRL LINDSAY.
January 2011: Officially steals $2,500 necklace from a jewellery store.
February 2011: Charged with grand theft.
October 2011: Avoids jail, and is ordered to compete 16 hours at the morgue.
November 2011: More morgue time, and psychiatric treatment is ordered…Oh and has to spend 30 days in Jail..but thankfully only served 4h 50min

So as you can see, Lindsay’s past 5 years have been…interesting? Still, regardless of all the lame bullshit she’s had to endure, her fan base still stays strong, and fantastic pieces of work dedicated to her (in a sense) have surface; for example @LILOFANFICTION. A satire on “living Lohan”.

The past is the past right Lindz? 2012 is your year! Just recently she came into $1 million (pre-tax) for a tasteful nude photo spread for Playboy magazine, was Richards Phillips muse (below) , she’s revamping her website, and is currently the face of Philipp Plein S/S 2012. Also, there’s a rumor floating around that she is in direct competition with Megan Fox for the role of Lifetime’s Elizabeth Taylor biopic, but this is probably bullshit.

2012 could be the start of a new life for Lindsay, and I have a a few suggestions on what she should start doing to get the respect she rightfully deserves…

• Stop getting lip injections – they just make you look older, and babe, you’re too cute already, there’s no need. Love yourself.
• Get it together and move out of LA. It’s fucking you up, and nothing in LALA land is real. Move to NYC or the country, those are your only two options
• Start doing work for free, or for room and board. Read really amateur/low budget film scripts. Get really dark. Who cares about the $$$ right now. You’re a good actress, all you gotta do is something that doesn’t need to insure you (because we all know that’s impossible), and something that you’re passionate about; play yourself. That’s what you’re best at..or what people really wanna see (??)
• Ditch you’re mom…she’s a bad influence. Or at the very least cease all business arrangements.
• Do more charity work, like actually do the work. No one is gonna hate you for giving back.
• Get heavy into Tumblr. Their are so many great Tumblr pages dedicated to you, showing ever side of you that we find interesting. Reblog and give back :)

Regardless of the path Lindsay chooses to take, as long as she stays alive, she will always have fame, and if she keeps pulling stunts like the did over the weekend at the Golden Globes, her cult following will continue to grow. #Pray4Lindsay

‘Purple Naked Ladies’ is nothing genius, but this is a solid album.  Never really being a fan of Odd Future (or just not really listening to them at all), after hearing The Internet I’m pretty stoked to familiaraize myself with the whole OFWGKTA crew. It’s nice to hear original beats with no samples, and Syd’s melodic voice riding slowly over each track.  Stay sharp and on the look out for a lot more to come from The Internet >>> the easiest name to Google.com

Not Forkchops is brought to us by Imm Living, a Canadian design team based in Toronto. A place for designers to showcase their ideas that have been inspired by the cultures around them. Unique, modern, and stylish designs created in the “melting-pot”; nothing so obtuse as the Forkchop.

Focusing on the kitchen, table top and wall décor Not Forkchop will demonstrate the work of ceramic artists and industrial designers a like. From small artisan factories like rcboisjoli, who draw from the low tech, old and everyday to create whimsical ceramics. To product designers who work with manufactures with far reach such as Michelle Ivankovic who has worked with Umbra.

Hosted at the Department Gallery, where corporate and artistic culture come together in a four level creative nucleus, viewers will have the chance to decide the fate of one of the designers. In a voting process that will become a spectacle of it’s own each designer has been assigned a specific colour of sticky-note, attendees will stick their vote to a blank wall. Essentially creating a democratic mosaic where the winner will have the chance to work with Imm Living and possibly see their designers sold on a global scale. (For those who cannot attend there will be a one day online voting process.)

To love or to find love

You know we are heading into the “Romantic Season” when retailers start turning their merchanise pink and red and white. Are you ready to “put Cupid on overtime?” Two of “Toronto’s most beautiful new voices” will be performing original music to start your “Valentines Day courtship early” Suzana da Camera and her Company of Men are set to pack Hugh’s Room. The music will be “sultry and sophisticated” and there will be elegant props, video design and extrodanary costumes.

Tickets are set at $17.50 with $20 at the door. The event is on Friday Feb 10th. Diana Salvatore will be starting off the evening. Diana and her 8-piece band have “created a unique mash-up of retro, modern and Motown.” The venue is located at 2261 Dundas Street West. TTC INFO” Start at Dundas West Station. Walk south along Dundas for about 5 mins. Hugh’s Room is on the west side of the street.

If you can’t get enough of Suzana , I have it on good authority she “just got booked to do Czehoski on Feb 14th proper.” A singles show/ party called “Stupid Cupid” invites all! Couples who may attend, “have to re-enact their first night meeting…” Czehoski, can be found at 678 Queen Street West. 30% off Tuition Grant

Dalton McGinty, the Premier of Ontario, has granted students, fresh out of high school or within 4 years of leaving high school, 30% off their tuition. There are some conditions, as there are with any program coming from the government. Premier McGuinty is quoted to say he wants his government “to focus on the earlier experience to help kids make that jump from high school to post secondary education.” There are many students for whom, this grant will not apply. Part time students, those who are considered, “mature” or those enrolled in Law, Medicine and Graduate students.

To quote the website: “The government has designed the grant to ensure that students from low- and middle-income families will receive the grant.” Parents will need to have an income under $160,000. For ALL the details, click the pink link up there. Who knows? Maybe you will qualify, or someone you know. That will make paying down student debt a bit easier. It is designed “for full-time undergraduate university and college students.” Starting in Jan 2012, it’s $800 for university and college degree students and $365 for college diploma and certificate students. In September 2012, the grant pays $1,600 a year for students in a degree program at a college or university, $730 a year for students in a certificate or diploma program at a college.

Legends of Karaoke

I love it when i can say my two favourites in the same sentence! Legends of Karaoke at Sneaky Dees goes down on Mondays. You can head to the restaurant for an awesome, and fairly reasonably priced nosh, complete with beer, generous portions of savoury food, AND dessert for around $20. Head upstairs to the concert venue for FREE as in NO COVER to experience singers who can choose from over 15,000 songs. Hosted Hosted by Bear Mad Love and John Joseph Pitts. Throw in three dollar drinks before 11pm and you have yourself a very good time. If you are new to to Karaoke, don’t fret. There is a lot of love in the room to help you sort it all out.

This world famous venue is located right smack dab in the middle of Bathurst and College. TTC INFO: Either the 511 Bathurst Streetcar from Bathurst Station south to College, or the 506 Carlton to Bathurst. Either way, it’s an easy place to find.
