20 Questions with Brad Weber of Caribou

20 Questions with Brad Weber of Caribou

By: Sheena Lyonnais

It’s busy times for Caribou drummer Brad Weber. The multifaceted musician is gearing up for an international summer-long tour with music gods, Radiohead kicking off in Mexico next month. But first, some DJ sets in Germany. And then, somehow the debut release of his other and equally impressive project Pick A Piper. Caribou visits home with a gig at Downsview Park on June 16 (buy tickets now, drugs later). And while he should probably be packing, he instead grants us insight into his brilliant, rhubarb-laced mind with 20Qs.

20 Questions with Said Yassin of Dudebox

Dudebox, dubbed Toronto’s socially conscious party people, are a group of rad dudes who throw raging parties in the name of a good cause. Each event is held for a specific charity, people go out, enjoy the night and give something back to the community in a way that inspires people to do what they love most in a socially acceptable way.

There will be another Dudebox rager this month so keep in touch and check out the Dudebox Facebook and Twitter feeds for the announcement of where it’s going down and what it’s going to be for.

In the meantime, Said Yassin of Dudebox was kind enough to fill out our 20 Questions this week:

20 Questions with The Hood Internet

20 Questions with The Hood Internet

Not to sound snobby, but Girl Talk is SO 2006.  Since then many have hopped on the mash-up genre but have been unable to do it well.  However, The Hood Internet (a duo composed of Aaron Brink -aka ABX and Steve Reidell – aka STV SLV, pronounced Steve Sleeve from Chicago) have done the unthinkable.  They have done mash-up in a way that would make Mr. Gregg Gillis (aka. Girl Talk) proud.  The epic mix tapes they have created fusing hip-hop, indie rock, dubstep and downtempo are enough to get any party started. Sure enough, they are taking on a party of epic proportions: Camp Bisco in Mariaville, New York taking place from July 7-9, 2011. and prior to them rocking the festival crowd out, we decided to grill them with our usual 20 Questions.

1. What is your dream of happiness?

STV: To be able to travel anywhere in the world and live there for as long as I feel like. Also, talking animals.
ABX: Grilled cheese with five types of cheese served with tomato soup that never gets cold and never burns your tongue.

2. Blonde or Brunette?

7. What’s your fav bar or club in the world?
STV: Tie between First Avenue in Minneapolis and Metro/Smart Bar in Chicago.
ABX: The Hideout in Chicago and The Blind Pig in Ann Arbor.

STV: Blind. I’ve seen lots of things and could approximate images, but not hearing new music would be a drag.
ABX: Definitely blind. I use my ears more than my eyes on a daily basis.

12. How old is too old?

20 Questions with Lindi Ortega

20 Questions with Lindi Ortega

Meet up and comer, Lindi Ortega. Her unique voice and token  red boots will be making an appearance at Dakota Tavern on the 7th to celebrate the release of her first full length album (signed with Last Gang Records). Her first EP received critical success, and we have a sneaking suspicion this Torontonian has much more in store for us in the future.

1. What is your dream of happiness?

Happiness itself is a dream and rarely a constant in the human existence. I am most happy when I am creating and performing. I dream about touring and bringing my music to the people and hopefully connecting with them on some level. Music is a universal language with which I hope to converse with as many people as possible. That is my dream of happiness.

2. Blonde or Brunette?

I think both are beautiful!

3. What is the quality you like most in a person?

Sense of humour

Fear itself. Letting fears get in the way of goals and aspirations. I do my best to not let that happen by facing my fears when I can.

We talkin old school Roland drum machines?  I’ll go with 808s just for fun!

Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen, and Dolly Parton

10. What is your favorite decade in music?

I’d rather go blind. I can’t imagine how I would get by without being able to hear music.

For what exactly? To have babies? to wear hot pants?  If it’s with regards to making music, I don’t think there is such a thing as too old so long as you’re good at it! Look at some of the old blues cats still kickin it.. they are like fine wine that gets better with age!

13. Where do you see yourself in 15 years?

20 Questions with Magnetic Man

20 Questions with Magnetic Man

Magnetic Man, self-titled debut out October 2010. Click here to buy on iTunes.

As dance music enjoys a rejuvenation, its heartwarming to see such creativity taking place with artists.  A great example of this is the dubstep ‘supergroup’ comprised of Artwork, Skream and Benga who have released their self-titled LP “Magnetic Man”.

This fourteen-track disc brings along female MC/vocalists Katy B and Ms. Dynamite for the ride. You’ll hear lots of, you guessed it, big heavy bass and furious break beats. The first single with Angela Hunte, “I Need Air” is big stadium dubstep.  Picture it at a football game (yes, I’m talking about soccer) rather than a dingy rave mosh-pit.  The rest of the album doesn’t alienate the real “heads” or rave roots from which they came. Serious hints of Massive Attack and Roni Size all through out this disc.

This album is fierce.  Which can take on constant replays in your iPod.  ‘Nuff said.

20 Questions With Stephen Ramsay of Young Galaxy

20 Questions With Stephen Ramsay of Young Galaxy

Young Galaxy’s third, and most recent album, “Shapeshifting”, is pretty damn gorgeous. It reminds us of so many other artists we love but in a new way where it sounds entirely their own. There’s a distinctive “album” feel throughout, which is to say you can just press play and let it go. It’s got all the airy ethereal stuff we like about Bat For Lashes, but it’s also got that sunny Sunday morning omelet making feel that early Phoenix albums had. If that makes any sense at all. In any case, we think you can listen to this album while you study, at your mom’s place for dinner, or in bed with a lover. It’s hopeful enough that it sounds upbeat and happy, but not so up-tempo that you can’t listen to it at the office. It’s gonna sound great outdoors on the concert circuit this summer for sure. Shit, we’re even digging the cover artwork. Just go buy it. You won’t regret it. Besides, you can say you were one of the firsts when they’re up for the next Polaris. Oh, and band mate Stephen Ramsay took our 20 Qs. Look at that, fun.
