Cutting off the Power Supply to Anamanaguchi

Cutting off the Power Supply to Anamanaguchi

Do you know what chiptune is? Anamanaguchi’s music comes from the same vein as the structured videogame tones from a hacked 1985 Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) that create those familiar arcade beeps and bloops that were constantly in the background for most of our childhoods only with more of a punk rock edge. I spoke with drummer Luke Silas. from the band on the telephone all the way from Miami, Florida.  Anamanaguchi are making their way to Toronto on January 21, 2012 with Extreme Animals and Moon King at Wrongbar (http://embracepresents.com/event/anamanaguchi/).  While he took in the warmth...

SebastiAn (Live) @ The Hoxton – September 8, 2011

SebastiAn (Live) @ The Hoxton – September 8, 2011

Toronto has waited a long time for Sebastian to come.  Thanks to the wonderful promoters over at Embrace and Hoxton, they brought this Parisian producer over to give Toronto a chance to experience his punchy beats & electro sounds live and in person. Upon my arrival to The Hoxton at 11PM, the doors had not opened and a crowd was anxiously forming outside.  It seems things were a bit delayed due to TIFF and someone had told me that Sebastian had only arrived into Toronto hours early.  Finally when the doors finally opened and I got the chance...

TIME Fest Video Int’s: Skream & Benga, Diplo, Kingdom

TIME Fest Video Int’s: Skream & Benga, Diplo, Kingdom

Our in-house Diplo fanatic, Vanessa V practically elbowed a girl in the face at our weekly meeting when we asked if anyone wanted to interview artists at TIME Festival on video for Embrace. She snarled, "That's mine!" and snagged the bios from my hand. We already posted her review and photos here if you slept on that shit, take a look. Now it's time for the video portion. Since my little cousin Ferris (a ripe 13) is in the office today, I asked her to review the footage for me. She's never heard of "dub step", or the "Sound Academy"...

NXNE Day 5: Girl Talk at the Sound Academy

NXNE Day 5: Girl Talk at the Sound Academy

Day 5 of NXNE promised to be a massive fun night at the Sound Academy with Key 'n Krates, Kidstreet, and headliner Girl Talk. Gregg Gillis (stage name Girl Talk) is a laptop artist from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania who specializes in sample based remixes, by using at least a dozen elements from any song you can think of, to create a new one. I got to speak with Gregg before his show about his music and his not so new obsession with collecting Air Jordans. You can find my interview on Embrace's site coming soon. Keys 'n Krates: Kidstreet: After a quick introduction and Girl...

LCD Soundsystem Roll Through Toronto

LCD Soundsystem Roll Through Toronto

The long weekend has concluded and alas, office life resumes.  And so what better way to kick start the workweek than with some dancey disco, curtsey of James Murphy and his cohorts, also known as LCD Soundsystem.  Scorching weather in the AM and screeching vocals at night, last night’s show at Kool Haus was the perfect spring sendoff.  Summer is here. The show begun early. The crack of my first Heineken was inaudible over Us vs. Them. The sold out crowd rushed the stage and proceeded to bounce.  Albeit early, but the Drunk Girls and those who love them were receptive...

Major Lazer at Sound Academy

Major Lazer at Sound Academy

At Pink Mafia it is very clear that I get dibbs on anything Diplo/ Major Lazer/ Mad Decent related. So here's my second rundown of another Major Lazer shindig. First off, big up to Embrace and TheJons for putting together another epic digital party at the Sound Academy. The last couple of parties I’ve been to have been nothing but good times. They're you know, ones of those "Yeah, I was SO there!" kind of parties you'll gush to your friends after you recover from that major hangover the next morning, of course. My night started off with Jess, her...

Most Fun Ever…Winter Music Conference

Most Fun Ever…Winter Music Conference

Our good pal, Stephanie Hynes just went to WMC, and was generous enough to tell us all about it. If you've never been to the World Music Conference in Miami, we highly recommend checking it out one of these years. In the meantime, enjoy.

Whenever I hear the word Miami I think of Will Smith and that song he did “Miami…south beach bringin the heat…”. Last year my eyes during WMC burned with jersey shore. This year jersey was out and about but a great addition was the well-dressed (that I saw NONE of last year) who came out of...

Embracing Digital Future

Embracing Digital Future

This lineup for Digital Future was HUGE!  Calvin Harris, Laidback Luke, Annie Mac, Toddla T, Fake Blood, Nero -- danggone. It was making me reminiscent of the days of my youth when I used to attend (gasp!) RAVES at the Sound Academy.  I know, right?  So this lineup was a rave for the future. Strutting into the venue that evening around 10:30PM, I was surprised to see it was already nicely filled out.  Nasty Nav was getting the crowd warmed up in the main room before BBC Radio 1's own Annie...

Fucked Up: Pictures By Jess Baumung

Fucked Up: Pictures By Jess Baumung

Fucked Up played Opera House last night (thanks Embrace) and they rule. We did an interview with Sandy Miranda you should probably check too. Here's some amazing pics from the show that Jess Baumung took. He also rules quite a bit.

Little Boots, Big Shoes

Little Boots, Big Shoes

All bow down to Little Boots. She may be small, but this delightfully colourful concoction of electro-pop and cuteness knows how to hold down a room. Or hype it. Toronto's Wrongbar was packed to the max for a Monday at midnight. Anticipation was heavy, adding to the already lingering humidity late into the evening. Armed with a live band and sparkly shoes, Little Boots stepped out in a metallic mini and neon pink nail polish, grabbing the mic and stomping on stage...

Our TIFF Guide to The Best Of 4AM License

Our TIFF Guide to The Best Of 4AM License

Here's our Guide to 4AM license in Toronto for International Film Festival (Click here for a downloadable guide!) Every club chomps at the celebrity bit during Film Fest but after years and years of parties, both official and un, we have become seasoned vets at this TIFF party biz. It's not about who's gonna be there (chances are you won't even get so much as a glance at Megan Fox at her party) it's more about who's in attendance on the dace floor. Whatever boring corporate bullshit you attend in Yorkville, or maybe you actually go to some...

20 Questions with Adam Gill

20 Questions with Adam Gill

As the founder of Embrace, Adam Gill does all that fun Porterhouse stuff with Steve Porter worldwide. As far as his history with scenester fun, he founded Rogers Picnic, now in its third year at Fort York, and he has co-produced many many parties with British Richard of The Fucking Social and A.D/D. Adam loves long walks on the beach, escaping to Miami, and trying to quit smoking. Look for him at TIME Festival, chain-smoking and stressing and running around handling business (probably with a burnt nose because he NEVER remembers sunscreen). 1. What is your...
