Entertaining Under the Influence…Beer 101

Entertaining Under the Influence…Beer 101

Ladies are finally starting to take their drinking seriously. Gone are the cosmos and in are whiskey sours. And I am so relieved (For my personal opinions on alcohol see this post).  Though I may not be able to hold my own in a scotch discussion beer is a whole other story. I spent a lot of the summer with a friend (aka The Brewmaster) who was brewing his own and heard endless stories about beer. The thing about beer is it’s easy to choose a brand (or the cheapest available) and stick with it forever. And that’s...

Stadium Love for Metric

Stadium Love for Metric

Passion Pit for Metric! Toronto's own Metric blew...'>Passion Pit for Metric! Toronto's own Metric blew...'>

Holy F*ck, I'm Passion Pit for Metric! Toronto's own Metric blew it out of the park Friday night, playing to an apparent sold-out Molson Amphitheatre. Take the Betsey Johnson crowd, throw in some flip-flops, moccasins, Bieber-cuts and boyfriends, multiply by 100, and stick them in a stadium. That is the Metric fan population of 2010.

Let's get some tees. Let's party.

Holy Fuck and Passion Pit were the openers, gaining a warm reception from the enthused crowd.

Cooking: Grilling for Girls

Cooking: Grilling for Girls

Same old story. You do all the work and prep and Mr. Macho man gets to be caveman for a day and stand around with his stupid little tongs and his still warm PBR and take care of the serious business of grilling. Eff. That. Noise. Grab your spatula's ladies. Barbecue season doesn't have to be all beards, burgers, and beer. you can totally have a healthy girls night around the barbecue without the gristle. We made grilled tomato bruschetta, glazed salmon, and grilled peaches with sweet coconut cream. Grilling the tomatoes releases lycopene, a strong antioxidant.  Salmon is chockfull of...

20 Questions With Holy Ghost

20 Questions With Holy Ghost

They were rappers, they were DJs, they were remixers, and now they have a full album to keep you footloose and fancy free, Holy Ghost! have risen from making drainpipe- sporting hipsters dance in New York to all over the continent and then some Check the myspace for the duos mad remixes of Phoenix, MGMT, Friendly Fires, and their own boomdiggy shit. In the mean  time Holy Ghost!'s (and they damn well earned that exclamation point) Nicholas Millhiser and Alexander Frankel took some time off to answer PinkMafia's 20 Q. 1. What is your dream of happiness? Alex: Big studio,...

Dollar Sign Valley Girl Visits Canada For First Time (Ke$ha’s Party)

Dollar Sign Valley Girl Visits Canada For First Time (Ke$ha’s Party)

Ke$ha (pronounced  ke-sha) is one odd duck. She’s been a stalker. She’s broken into Prince’s house and she digs dudes with mullets. It’s balls out with this girl and her character is noted and sparkles and rules, but her audience is not hearing anything they’ve never heard before. On Sunday night, Ke$ha made her Canadian debut at the Mod Club to gaggles of girls and industry insiders. There was drum-banging, bouncing and thrashing, all under the influence of a shiny substance called glitter. The set was about 30 minutes and ended with chart-topping single Tik Tok...

Thunderheist: Thunderstorm

Thunderheist: Thunderstorm

A mad mishmash of electro/hip-hop/synthy success, Toronto/MTL duo Thunderheist blew through The Mod Club on Thursday night. The crowd was assorted in attendees, pretty young things and party people, all equally excited and energetic as they eagerly awaited the performance. Singer Isis stepped out donning the marvelous Greta Constantine seat belt-esque corset top and shiny skinnies, aura ablaze with fabulousness. Her casual banter immediately connected the audience and developed a presence of knowingness and cool familiarity. Smooth vox and MC skills brought TH's debut album to live life, causing a sweaty stir. The venue's...

The Teaches of Peaches

The Teaches of Peaches

Peaches' reign over Toronto is imminent. Six months after fluttering in on a gust of golden amazing-ness, Peaches was back Wednesday night at The Phoenix to charm the overzealous and starry-eyed audience. Opening this worldwide tour is Amanda Blank, a feisty firecracker from Philly with panache to spare. The show began with a rad 15 minute dj set, then Amanda bounced onto stage clad in a very Peaches-esque cape-ensemble. “It just got real hip-hop up in here!” Word. In between speaker-gyrations and swooning over Peaches, Amanda Blank pranced around in a...

Her Name Is Kylie!

Her Name Is Kylie!

It is almost unbelievable that 2009 marks Kylie Minogue's first time performing in Canada. Ever. The ACC was packed with gay boys, old school Kylie fans with their children, retired ravers, and an assortment of glittered-out characters, some who have been waiting 20 years for this concert opportunity. And for good reason. Opening with a major laser light show, Kylie descended from the heavens a top a stunning, sparkling disco spectacle of a skull, draped in a confection of coral feathers and jeweled excellence. A truly theatrical performance all around, there was a cabaret rendition of...

Little Boots, Big Shoes

Little Boots, Big Shoes

All bow down to Little Boots. She may be small, but this delightfully colourful concoction of electro-pop and cuteness knows how to hold down a room. Or hype it. Toronto's Wrongbar was packed to the max for a Monday at midnight. Anticipation was heavy, adding to the already lingering humidity late into the evening. Armed with a live band and sparkly shoes, Little Boots stepped out in a metallic mini and neon pink nail polish, grabbing the mic and stomping on stage...

‘Til The End of Time

‘Til The End of Time

A live music festival. An after hours rager. A DJ's personal playground. Wrap all that into one and you've got yourself a sweaty dance party known as the annual Time Festival. Toronto hosts numerous music fests throughout the year, but none compare to the unique lineup of Time. Local djs and acts, as well and widely accredited artists like Crystal Castles and Rye Rye all came together to play this all-nighter, harboring an eclectic mix of crowd who know what's up. With all those factors, you can't help but get a decent recipe for a great party and potential for...

Gaga For Gaga

Gaga For Gaga

Lady Gaga wants your soul, Toronto. And she'd probably fuck you for it, too. A little or a lot of ridiculousness is what most have come to expect from the Lady, and she wasn't skimping on it in Friday night. An overall energetic performance at the Kool Haus, the show started at 10:40pm (about forty minutes late), and ended at midnight. Gaga rocked multiple wardrobe changes, including her “bitch in a bubble” ensemble, and brought out the disco stick. The crowd was filled with Gaga-wannabes; blonde wigs, sequined dresses, eccentric hair pieces (including my own giant flower). Girls...

Show Stopper, Panty Dropper

Show Stopper, Panty Dropper

Nobody told me I was attending a hardcore show. Or the impending brilliance of Peaches, live! I was definitely expecting the unexpected, and the expectantly unexpected is what went down Wednesday night. Peaches was back in Toronto in all her hometown glory. Playing to a packed Phoenix Concert Theatre, the crowd was diverse, eccentric, and ready & willing. Peaches can't help but engage you. Appropriately, Show Stopper was song number one, with Peaches creeping out of the shadows in a giant pink bubble-like contraption and sparkly mask, resembling one of those exotic, man-trap flowers. Stripping the pink wonder,...
