Michael Jackson’s Releasing An Album…From The Grave
Michael Jackson’s almost a rapper. Had he been a rapper, his label/family/whom ever else needed to make a buck would have released an album within minutes of his death. After years of putting out total duds and let’s face it, touching boys, Michael Jackson managed to martyr himself with the ultimate rockstar act of an untimely death. And now he’s putting out a new album.
His parents are in control of his estate, and it’s his mother’s face they’ve put to it, since Joe was proven as an abusive tyrant long ago. In any case, this might be the best thing for the Michael Jackson empire. It worked for Elvis. When he died, he was an overweight, bankrupted joke who was lionized (through his ex-wife Priscilla no less) and turned into a bonafide business to the tune of millions a year (Lisa Marie now manages the Graceland and Elvis Trademark and legacy) after his death. Elvis, in fact, never looked so good.
“Hold My Hand” is the first single off his new album, MICHAEL, which is due out December 14th on Epic Records (Michael Jackson has been with Sony for 35 years, remember? he made shit albums in the last decade and blamed Tommy Mattola for being racist instead of his music for being shit?). It features Akon, the king of features and sounds like a cross between shit Michael Jackson’s more recent career ballads for the children, in the “We Are the World” vein and crap rappers guesting on bigger profile artist’s songs to keep paying their varying and growing child support bills, a la Shaggy, Lil Jon and R. Kelly. Also included on the new album are guests appearances by 50 Cent and Lenny Kravitz.
I know we’re being cynical, but we just feel it’s too soon to forgive and forget. Then again, you never know, maybe he’ll pull an Ian Curtis and make the best music of his life just after his death. Either way, we smell a cash cow for the Jackson family and the label and after years of Michael’s irrational behavior, maybe it’s time they got a little something back.

Humans, After All
Robbie Slade and Peter Ricq are just two regular guys. They’ve got 9-5er’s just like you and I, but instead of needlepoint or bonsai trimming their hobbies include collaborating together on their roots-electro-folk duo Humans.
You may remember their outrageously entertaining video for “Bike Home” which they Jim Henson’d themselves; but they’ve accomplished much more since meeting nearly 3 years ago now at a pop art gallery in Vancouver. For starters, they’ve built a reputation as Vancouver’s best party band. Peter who was originally from Montreal joined Robbie in the city to, er, party. “We got together to do this, to make people dance, really. But the songwriting is rooted mostly in folk and I’d say some soul.”
Hot on the heels of the October 12th release of their Aves Mes Mecs EP, they’re already bustling with new ideas and readying for their next album: “A lot of stuff [from the EP] is old. To be honest, part of the releasing it was like ‘ok, that’s done. Let’s move on now’. We’ve got some more old stuff that we’re reworking just because we do like the ideas behind them but we really didn’t get the time to do it properly.”
Robbie hints at a change in direction that is both ambitious and uniquely experimental: “I’ve got some world music that I’d really like to get out there. Like Canadian world music…they’ve got some super good music.” They’ve also been talking about adding depth through the incorporation of Robbie on drums: “it gives you way more kick because we get everything out of the sampler right now and when we play with a drummer it’s just so much more layered.” An indication of what fans can anticipate Robbie says can be found on the track “Wake Up” from the EP.
Their musical influences are as eclectic as their sound: “I love Tony Owens…We’ve both been listening to Daft Punk for as long as they’ve been around…They’re like Gods. They’re royalty. I really like Nirvana back in the day and I was so into Michael Jackson, before he got all weird…old Beatles like ‘Love Me Do Era’.”
While Vancouver may have crowned them as their party band, Robbie jokes: “We can’t play in Vancouver anymore, we’ve played so much. I don’t want people to get sick of us!” They’re currently touring Eastern Canada with some dates in the States. The secret seems to be out and things seem to be going pretty great for the duo: “We did a couple little shows in LA, and everywhere we’ve played they’ve given us rave reviews so we’re super stoked to go back.”

20 Questions With Eric Balfour
Eric Balfour has long been a pal of PinkMafia’s and even though he lives in LA permanently he’s often up in the Great White North shooting either something for the boob tube or moving pictures. He’s been living in Halifax for a minute now shooting a rad new series called Haven (premieres on Showcase July 12) that’s based on Stephen King novella, The Colorado Kid. Essentially it’s a sci-fi dramatic thriller set in a small town called Haven (in Maine) that an FBI agent (played by Emily Rose-Jericho, Brothers and Sisters) stumbles upon whilst investigating a routine case. It’s got all the stuff that good TV is made from: Suspense. Supernatural powers. Babes. And if it’s shot in Halifax, you can bet the scenery will be extra dreamy. Peter Franco Sneakers Party @ The Ossington
In spite of a week filled with Jeanne Becker primping and Joe Mimran frosting Peter Franco Sneakers, encourages the fashion-aware with another round of culturally divine media from a politically adverse enterprise by fashionable MEN. Badass Design. From McCaul to Dowling, PFS is zestfully accessible and encompasses a pursuit of true self that reflects Queen West to a tee.
Tomorrow.The.World. Photo loops and frisky tunes. Brazilian bubble baths and Pink Ammunition. This fall, the boys shoot conventional fashion trends, scholars and kids. Blasted to a place where sweaty blonds demand seconds of peppermint tea and miniature cupcakes and gentlemen eat their words.
While topping the PFS spring/summer 2009 was to be unexpected (the Thriller T in marigold rejuvenated MJ with a majestic image of him carousing a vaguely familiar porn star from behind) and was by far the summer’s hottest item. This season, Michael, Willis and Taurean heartily branded ‘youth’ and ‘nostalgia’ with Peter Franco Sneakers soup. Catch them on the flip and holler for a piece.

Jacko Jacket, Jacko Style
Habitually, when I window shop for blazers, the King of Pop, does not cross my mind, however yesterday it did. Perhaps, I could attribute it to the largest memorial in history that ever went down, the a few days ago, with his recent passing, but remember, I’m a fashionista first off and foremost; so, my realization was the blazer I was looking at could actually be traced to MJ circa 1987 Bad Tour. An awesome find indeed, but much too hefty for my Chinese Laundry clutch to handle. As I say farewell to the Balmain’ish jacket, I am reminded of the trends that were brought to light through Michael Jackson fearless sense of style.
1972, at Royal Variety at London Palladium. Afro and plaid chic, scarves on men are so in!

1977, with The Jacksons. Yes! "Come they told me , pa...ra...pa...pum...pum." You'll see this padded shoulder, drummer boy jacket translate itself circa 90's.
1981, Triumph Tour. The leather pleather pants will come into play again, with a fitted top, probably not sequened, but if singing in front of millions, permitted.
"Beat It" Album Cover, 19831984, at American Music Awards with Brook Shields1989, American Music Awards. Find these jeans at American Apparel, for sure; and the high tops? Baby, they never left.

1990, Life Magazine. The toned down Jheri curls, even I did this look with a perm and mousse, crunch, crunch; and the fedora is timeless.

2007, Ebony Magazine. Just call this Chiq Robotic!
An iconic figure for so many reasons, with fashion being one of them, Michael Jackson will go down in history for his radical efforts to pave the way for those looking to break the fashion barrier between male and female, giving the term unisex a whole new meaning. Michael Jackson will be immortalized through his music, dance moves, and trade mark military jacket. The beat will go on!

RIP to the KING of POP

OMG!!! I’m sure y’all have heard by now… Michael Jackson the King of Pop died yesterday at the age of 50. Honestly, I kno that everyone around the world is feelin’ this one to the bottom of their hearts; even my Grandma was like MJ? say it isn’t so!!! No matter what corner of the world your in or from, I guarantee at one point in your life you attempted the Moon Walk, the spin and the conveted crotch grab… be honest.

I kno a couple of you even rocked the one glove and mini leather jacket (my brother did one year for halloween!!) Sooo, all I ask of my peeps is just to take a moment of silence for the one who taught us how to be A SMOOTH CRIMINAL while being so BAD it was THRILLER. And BTW, BILLIE JEAN is not my lover… I’m all about DIRTY DIANA, who won’t give me ONE MORE CHANCE!!

From the Jackson Five to the Jacksons to MJ in his prime (even after the accident) and court cases, NO MATTER what we had his back!! I’m blasting his number ones album as we speak.. and ya know I can’t lie, a few tears fell on the keyboard.

Its a sad day :(… not just in music but in HISTORY!!! We just wanna say from the bottom our PINK hearts… MJ “I CAN”T STOP LOVING YOU” because YOU ROCK MY WORLD!!!!
Michael Jackson aka THE KING OF POP (Aug. 28th, 1958- June 25th, 2oo9)

Get Er Done Part Deux: Banff
From the moment we got in the car, I knew Banff was going to take us places we might not fully bounce back from.
Don’t let this down tempo photo fool you, them party animals are just recharging their batteries for the later on.
Having just been through a Halloween extravaganza, Aurora nightclub (which, by the way was no shit box either, it was quite the classy joint) had all kinds of fun costume accessories left for dead by their owners. And thus, we found new and interesting ways to terrorize Kenzie-on-a-stick.
Oh yeah, and here’s Mandeep with the same toilet bit.
Let it be noted that once again, Wax Romeo got so drunk during his opening set that he played 150 songs in an hour, including the roughest mix of Tears For Fears into Michael Jackson that I have ever witnessed. We let it slide because he also played some of the sexiest disco tracks known to man.
As part of my white-knuckled fear of Whitehorse, I brought a snow suit with me. Turns out, it’s damn handy if we need to walk more than five feet to the venue from the hotel, or for light box podium dancing.
What is with ONLY the ski towns getting the rider right? Are you big city folk just so bloated on your cool factor that you can’t get it together to get some bitches the assorted gum the asked for on the rider? Might be a good time to note that all you fuckers DID sign a contract.
And who might be the guy who sorted the rider out? This fine gentleman right here.
His name is Mendleman, like Cher, it’s just the one name. This photo was taken right after he defended our honor with some meathead snowboard (an Aussie most likely) jock. That mark is where he got stepped on (just a guess).
I also wanted to include a little photo of the top dogs in Banff. The guys still wearing their herp-infested Halloween costumes get all the poon in Banff. How can you tell? Only a man totally full of his own ego would make such an ass out of himself for no apparent reason. Side note: their third amigo is the one that fought with Mendleman. Figures.
The only difference between me and those boys though is that when I put on this suit, I make gold records.
Back at the ranch, the party was poppin’. Kenzie was back up dancing with that look of hers that just screams “party towns”!
The crowd in Banff was proper fit. Sorry Toronto, with your boring sheep-like stares, Montreal, you spoiled brats, Kingston’s constant gangster rap requests, the West has been keeping it skin tight all night. Edmonton knew how to start a dancefloor and Banff was tight like a virgin on prom night. We even got flashed some tits on the dancefloor.
All that just encouraged is to drink. You know how we get riled up.
Here’s a visual in case you’re having a hard time getting your mind there.
Before leaving we took some requisite nature shots of course. True to Get Er Done tour form, we fit in like dirty shirts.
P.S In case you’re keeping score, that’s Andrew MacDonald from the Montreal date. He suddenly showed up, sans mustache ready to go. He’s like fucking Michael Landon in Highway to Heaven, but without the God agenda.
