Betsey Johnson Fashion Show Photos By Matt Vardy
The Betsey Johnson show at Liberty Grand was the talk of the town as the finale for Toronto Fashion Week. Montreal’s Blondish on the ones and twos and famous supermodel Aggy D, plus a show and glamour of course. Take a look at the lovely photos from guest photog, Matt Vardy.
MONTREAL: Blog Wars W/ Drop The Lime, Classixx, and Harvard Bass
When I walked into Le Belmont, I was taken aback by complete shock. The doors opened at 9 o’clock, and there was a one-free-drink for everyone rule before 10 o’clock. Before my eyes is a sea of middle-aged men and woman, slow dancing to jazz and oldies music. Confused by the sight of divorced men and woman prowling around, flirting and trying to find new love, I wondered whether or not I was at the right venue.

Finally, I caught the only two younger people in the crowd. Alex from Duke of Swabia sat with me and reassured me that this was the right venue. A fellow Concordia University student like me, explained to me that “Blog Wars” is a nightclub battle between Montreal’s biggest entertainment blogs who are having a friendly “Ipod battle”, which reminds me of that famous rap battle scene from 8 mile, only with Ipod’s.

By 10:30 pm, the atmosphere changed drastically. What was once a decaying, mid-life crisis, middle-aged single’s gathering became a sanctuary for unground house, electro, techno and house dance music, full with vibrant youth and a rave-like atmosphere.

The Blogs that were competing: As Heard From Mars, Mess With The Best, Indecent Xposure, Saintwoods.com, Duke of Swabia, Goldzmine and 4MTL all came together to create the ultimate party playlist. It’s one blog against the other and the winner leaves Le Belmont with a better ego and sense of establishment as Montreal’s best entertainment collective blog.

Sandy, a dedicated fan to a few of these blogs thinks this is a “sick event for elecktro.” The atmosphere was vibing with tons of people like her, enjoying their free drink and the new Canadian energy drink Red-Rain. The blogs began the battle. Cheer after louder cheer, blog groups advanced or were dismissed by the crowd.

Eventually the finalists were 4MTL and Indecent Exposure. The MC, who had trouble the whole night trying to read and understand who the majority of shouts went out too, had both blogs have two showdown 20 sec overtime matches. Finally, after Le Belmont was erupted with wall-shaking screams, 4MTL emerged the winner.

Finally, a little bit after midnight, Harvard Bass began playing beats. Straight from California, Harvard Bass is an original DJ, but his base lines aren’t but they bring the “dub”. His remixes are pretty dupstep-like because they have a heavy feeling and go into that little dub- “wooops”, but at the same time the beats are very electro with a mix of techno. However, because the blog battles lasted so long and the technical set ups for these DJs took quite a bit of time, the alcohol started to wear off and the crowd was becoming rather lazy, like his Zombie-Nation remix. Unfortunetly, Harvard Bass didn’t expect their music to be the make-it or break-it for the vibe that night.

Next was Classixx (a Knee Socks Beat Cleavage fav) who play classical house music remixing songs from the 80s and 90s. They reminded me of an ex-girlfriend whom I dated who was a huge Indie fan. I loved their wildly popular Lisztomania remix by Phoenix. Unfortunately, this chill music did not slide well with much of the audience, because they were so vibed-out and detoxicated from Harvard Bass and the slow set up.

The night went by but the party just started with Drop The Lime. Those who stayed to see him were really in for a trip. Drop the Lime from Brooklyn, New York presenting the tropical, bossa nova freestyle genres was a true character. Drop the Lime was truly the best for last. He had spirit, which was badly needed towards the end of the night. The dance floor was emptying, but Drop The Lime put in his complete rave-power to get the audience involved and to get the rest of the audience smoking outside to come back in and party.

Though the night overall was a success, the bloggers got a chance to get known. The set up was way to slow, and for whatever reason, the crazy ravers didn’t show up. Maybe they weren’t invited on Facebook. For me, this was a first time experience and I think i replayed all these crazy beats in my dreams.

Montreal: Madonna’s Boy Toy DJs the Gay Village

In Montreal’s bustling and colorful quarter better known as the “gay village” welcomed none other than model and DJ Jesus Luz at Club Unity Saturday night playing the most recent pulsating beats for about 250 people. Despite rumors that Madonna’s boy toy lacks any real DJ skills and plays pre-mixed CD’s didn’t stop the crowd from going all out on the dance floor even causing more than just a few men to strip down to their tiny underwear. After showing up almost an hour after he was due in the booth, Jesus dashed through two quick questions with the media, gave a big smile in three directions at the flashing cameras, and practically bolted toward the back of the club in preparation for his performance, requesting no further interviews. He’s clearly picked up a few habits from the material mom.

Wearing a black t-shirt and jeans, and sporting dark shades, the Brazilian pretty boy was a single spectacle of his own as his fervent energy, rhythm, and star quality was like eye candy. It’s no doubt that he has a blast DJing, beating his fists in the air, mouthing the lyrics to every song, and encouraging the crowd – and occasionally grabbing the begging hands of excited girls and guys who climbed atop of their friend’s shoulders just to get a peek of him. What better way to hype up his music career by borrowing Madonna’s large gay fan base, especially when you got the Queen of Pop herself pulling the strings.

King Khan & The BBQ
Well well well. For those of you who have followed formerly Canadian /now German Garage rock duo, King Khan & the BBQ from the start, then you may already know that they tend to cause quite a commotion wherever they go, and not in the Twi-hard kind of way. King Khan is somewhat of a legend in his own respect, being described from others
as quirky, funny & weird. So I was excited to have the chance to speak with Mr.Khan while him & BBQ rolled through the USA [GPS guiding them, as our interview proceeded] and discuss the important things in life. Little did I know, this would be one of the last conversations King Khan & the BBQ would have before some mayjah shizz went down. As
a girl who doesn’t kiss & tell, all I will say is… if you want to find out, Google it. Check out King Khan & the BBQ on December 4, 2009 @ Lee’s Palace.
In the meantime, here are 4 of the most important questions ever asked of a band. Stay tuned for more on King Khan after they roll through town net week.
1. Toronto or Montreal?
Neither, Berlin. Because that’s where I live.
2. Southwest BBQ or Korean BBQ?
Southwest BBQ. The salt lick in Austin is amazing. That place has
the best BBQ ever.
3. GZA or the RZA?
Hmm – that’s a hard question. I’m going to have to go with GZA.
We performed together during NXNE together. We ended up just playing
music in the hotel together. Did something similar together in Austin during another festival.
4. True Blood or Twilight.
Twilight is cool for kids. I’ve never seen True Blood but I keep
hearing how good it is.

20 Questions with John Hatz
NEON began as a concept & quickly became a collective in late 1998 when friends Tiga, Justin Dallegret, Mark Dillon & John Hatz teamed up to create the perfect club night that could house the groups eclectic & ever growing musical & visual tastes. Music was evolving, but the existing clubs were getting boring & formulaic. The new club night the four were designing was to stay true to its mission of quality & originality. The Idea was to do away with the traditional club look & feel & start from scratch, doing away with lasers, smoke machines & introducing interior & graphic design, mood & lighting elements that would match the new sounds that were developing throughout the world. Everything had to change, the layout of the venue physically & visually to accommodate the new musical sound NEON was introducing.
1. What is your dream of happiness?
Being remembered after I’m gone. Reaching my potential, figuring out what my role is and applying whatever I am supposed to contribute most effectively, and succeeding at what I set out to do. No beaches for me.
2. Blonde or Brunette?
Both – equally sexy just different. (like day + night – both are great.)
3. What Is the quality you like most in a man?
A man who honors his debts + takes responsibility for his decisions + values loyalty & reciprocates that to others. Courage, leadership, influence.
4. What do you fear most?
Death + discovering or confronting nothingness…
5. 808s or 909s?
909 definitely, (but I’m basing this strictly on the graphics + look of the machines.)
6. What’s your biggest regret?
The time I have wasted. I will never get that back, and now I am further behind that I should be.
7. What’s your fav bar or club in the world?
Was Yoda’s Den on Roy St in the plateau in Montreal, doesn’t exist anymore.
8. What’s the one thing you can’t you live with out?
Weed (gives me all my creative ideas.)
9. What are the 3 musicians dead or alive you’d like to see perform?
1960s Rolling Stones, Elvis + 70s Led Zeppelin
10. What is your favorite decade in music?
70s + early 2000s (tie)
11. If you had to choose, would you rather go blind of deaf and why?
Deaf I guess it’s the lesser of two evils – I think specifically as a sense sight is more valuable to be able to function in society – blindness would make me to dependent on others for mobility. For me it’s just about survival, then I would deal with not being able to hear music, that sucks but I would rather be able to see I guess.
12. How old is too old?
Im going to skip this one since I’m almost at the age I would use for my answer. I will say 40 max then you should get off the floor + stay back stage.
13. Where did you see yourself in 15 years?
Hopefully producing television or web TV & Media – letting my business grow + increasing our shows to another level + having establishing some sort of design esthetic or technique that people use + are influenced by.

Anyone that’s gone from rags to riches
15. What’s your favourite colour?
Black, mint green, grey + chocolate brown.
16. What song could you live without ever hearing again?
Anything by the gypsy kings – fuck I can’t even think about it.
17. Metallica or Madonna?
hmmm, I would say 90s madonna
18. What’s your most hated vice?
Smoking – I’ve since quit (2 years ago) but it was hard as fuck.
19. Who is the most tragic figure in history?
I think if we’re keeping this in a musical theme I have to say Mike Jackson – from where he started to how he ended up, how manipulated + used he must have let himself be, he deteriorated + died slowly while he destroyed himself. Tragic.
20. What are the top three live shows you’ve seen in your life?
Pink Floyd when I was in my teens + Rage against the machine at Lollapalooza in the 90s + Pearl Jam with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers in my teens.

Steam Whistles’ Unsigned Hype

The show opened with the self-proclaimed one man band GoldenGirls, and yes its one word. He was a machine cranking out party favourites like The Big League. How could we forget GoldenGirls’ new record titled XOXO? Tom performed the single Sex War whose lyrics were too catchy to forget… “1,2,3,4 I declare a sex war”. Even though he’s quite content being a one man army he does… “Wish he had a @%#$in’ drummer.”

Up next was my new fav band… Creature from Montreal. One word NUTS. The female lead vocalist Cowbella is mega bitchin as she skanked all over the stage. Belting out hits like Pop Culture with male vocalist Kim Ho who was bustin a move like no body’s business. Kim Ho was on fire, so much so that his guitar and vocals were too hot to handle. His jittering hips and pelvic thrusts were reminiscent of Prince, in the early days. They were outta hand just like a kid with ADD on Ritalin.

Straight from Scarborough, the dynamic duo The Carps where holdin it down. The Carps with Neil White instructing the infused bass and synths had a focus akin to that of a Scientist. Jahmal Tonge played the drums until his arms fell off while singing and screaming with the soul of an RnB/soul singer. The duo belted out hits like Veronica Belmont and All The Damn Kids fully equipped with a Soca vibe.

The night ended off with a bang as wild as our Hometown Heroes The Woodhands, as they finally made a long overdue return to TO! The bass and synths of Dan Werb were so sick you didn’t know whether you were at a rave, a house party or a rock concert… just INSANE. They played crowd favourites like their cover of Eddy Grant’s Electric Avenue which had the whole dance floor grooving. The vocals and synths where so on point it hurt for the Can’t See Straight. And surprise, surprise they ended the set with the hit Dancer featuring crooner Maylee Todd.
In between sets we had the turntable duo DJ FAMOUS PLAYERS, who were dropping down some dirty beats and even nastier basslines… The night was about cutting rug and letting your backbone slide. And that we did… Can’t wait for the next one!!!

Get Er Done Part Deux: Montreal
As I write this blog entry, we’re flying through Red Deer en route to Edmonton listening to Huey Lewis and the News, “Heart And Soul” which is somehow fitting for the prairies. “Hot lovin’ every night” is right Huey.
Where do I start? Getting out of K-Town was rough to say the least. After tearing that joint a new one, we had little to spare for MTL. We stayed with Angelo, our resident hotel and best bud.
Bitchin’ stayed with Matt Rose, who has some sweet crosswords in his bathroom if you ever need to make an emergency stop.
Off to Blue Dog. If you’re not familiar, Blue Dog used to be the drum and bass bar in MTL, but ever since the Team Canada bought the sucker, it’s been all about the up and coming beats on Sundays.
Doug and some other Kingstonians came out to the Montreal date too.
We played with Jordan Dare, one of the most underrated DJs in the country and pretty much the best DJ in Montreal. Thank God he’s also our resident dude.
This might be a good time to mention that stupid hot clothing line, Hellz Bellz is sponsoring our fine asses on the old Get Er Done. They be hooking us up with the freshest gear a lady can get her ass into.
The finger is a common way to say hello in Montreal in case you didn’t know. Both our buddy Andrew MacDonald
and J.Dare greeted us in this manner, which we found jarring at first, but were flattered by once we found out it’s a Quebec term of endearment.
Honourable mentions: Partying till 6am before piling into a car enroute to Tornto’s Pearson airport for the flights out west. Seeing Rita McNeil in the airport but failing to get her to sign the poo log.
Grandtheft throwing down a DJ set for fun.
And of course, Montreal sushi takeout taking 2 hours because Montreal is on Mexican time!
Next up, Edmonton. You better work!
5 Minutes with Isis Salem of Thunderheist
The female star of Thunderheist has had a hectic year including local performances at Rock Star Hotel (at The Gladstone, during the MMVAs), The Beats,Breaks and Culture festival (check out our review of the fest here) at the Harbourfront and upcoming performance at The Virgin Festival on Saturday September 6th (yes this Saturday) in the Bacardi B-Live Tent, among Let’s Go to War and Nasty Nav . Isis took a little time out of her crazy schedule to chat with me about fame, fortune and Patron Tequila.

Mica: So Where did you and Grahm Zilla meet?
Isis: We met online on myspace.
M: Did he contact you or did you contact him first?
Isis: Our current manager works at Future Classic in MTL. I met her a while back when i was 18 in Edmonton, and she put Grahm onto my music via myspace and he contacted me and eventually we met when I was playing the Jazz festival ’06 in MTL. And we met officially face-to-face then.
M: Where did you guys first perform together?
I: It was at this place that’s now closed down in MTL. It was packed wall to wall, and we only had about a 10 minute set. But it was pretty cool. It was a Peer Pressure show.
M: When did you decide you wanted to be a musician…full-time?
I: It was Montreal, summer of..maybe ’04? I’d decided to do it full time and it’s what I’ve been doing ever since. And then Thunderheist is since the latter half of ’06.
M: Where do you see yourself in a year?
I: I expect to be rich enough to buy a yacht with spinners. That continue to spin even when I’m not rowing.
M: Any colour?
I: I want the rims to be this purple [she pointed to her belt. An eggplanty colour with a dope gold buckle] and diamonds and the boat can be an ivory white
At this point her friends inturrupt that a yacht isn’t supposed to be rowed and she snapped back,
I: Oh no, my yacht will be rowed. By skinny white boys.
M: So do you guys have any backstage rituals before, or after the show?
I: Not really. Thunderheist is a perfect example of two distinct individuals coming together. We really, kinda do our own thing. Before the show, Grahm will run through certain songs, which he’ll fuck up and outside of that, I just try to have a few minutes alone, to rest and get my mind together. And I like to have 3 shots of Patron Tequila, a bottle of water.
M: If you could’ve collaborated with anyone on the the new album who would it be?
I: Bad Idea and Santogold. I love Santo, we met last year at Osheaga, last summer. and she’s really fucking awesome.I’d love to work with her…she played with Thunderheist, we opened for her. She’s amazing. I’d love to work with her, or do a collaboration with her. Also Death Set. They’re way more punk-ish but I’d love to work with Johnny, he’s amazing.
M: If you could describe your music in 3 words:
I: Crazy.Sexy. Cool
M: Yourself?
I: Crazy. Sexy. Cool
M:Can you describe Grahm in 3 words?
I: Super. Awesome. Party-time.
M: What were the last 3 songs you put on your iPod?
I: I don’t have an i Pod. And I won’t have an iPod until Apple decides to pay me.
M: Who is your ultimate hero? Of all time?
I: My ultimate hero of all time…I’ll say Nina Simon, Prince and Jesus in a super team.
M: Like, X-Men?
I: Nonono, like Transformers. Wait Oprah, Jesus, Nina Simone and Prince. In a Transformer… Yeah, that would be my ultimate hero.
M: 808s or 909s?
I: 808s
M: What was your favourite decade of music?
I: 30′s Jazz.
M: What is the one thing that you cannot live without?
I: My 3 chamber metal weed grinder.
M: What is your ideal day in life?
I: Kinda what I’m living know. I want more leisure time, without feeling guilty. More beach time. My ideal life is waking up every morning, on a beach or an island somewhere and being in a nice little shack. I’m kind a woman like that.
M: So 5 years ago, where did you see yourself? Did you reach all your goals?
I: Oh, I knew I was going to be famous. My middle name [which is Omolola] means child of wealth. My parents knew this too.
M: Is there anything you wish you had reached that you didn’t?
I: I think everything is going to be achieved. I wished I’d make music full time and I’m now there and Im now realizing that’s going up to a greater level. I’m very excited with where we are now. I had the feeling that this is where I was going to be who knows how big it’ll be.
M: Knee socks or cleavage?
I: Well….I don’t grow hair on my legs. So kneesocks are kind of dumb. So I’ll have to say cleavage. Titties out, all the time.
