Bow-Dacious Betsey Johnson

Bow-Dacious Betsey Johnson

Walking into the Brant House this past Tuesday evening, it was evident that every bow sporting, 80s prom dress loving, GBF toting fashionista was in the house. Droves of youngsters hit up the 30^th anniversary show of the beloved Betsey Johnson label which featured the FW/08 collection.

Before the show kicked off, I weaseled my way backstage to check out the ensembles and chat with the crew about Toronto Fashion Week. The makeshift bar/backstage was a flurry of stylists, makeup artists, models (including runway stars Taryn Davidson, Kori Richardson, Amanda Laine) and entourages rushing to complete the final touches before show time. As any Betsey connoisseurwould assume, the FW/08 collection reflected the designers love for patterned punchy-coloured fabrics and larger than life details. Doll-faced models were dressed in outfits ranging from lace and satin froufrou dresses to acid coloured knit minis. While some critics disagree with showcasing an extremely diverse collection, Betsey Johnson has never been known to stick to the mold and although each piece was very different from the rest, her passion for funkiness and eccentricity holds presence in each design. I headed back upstairs to take my place (or should I say shove my way) by the catwalk. The excitement and energy escalated with every passing moment. After much anticipation the show kicked off with the models taking over the catwalk wearing grins from ear to ear and blowing flirty kisses to the crowd. The DJs spun an amazing set of funky beats which complemented the informal, fun vibe of the show. All too soon the show was over and the wound up crowd was left wanting more. One thing is definately for sure, the packed show was a testament of our love for the designer and Betsey definately didn’t let us down!
